Tampico, the second most important commercial port along the Gulf of Mexico, is located on the southeastern tip of Tamaulipas, 254 km (157 mi) southeast of state capital Ciudad Victoria. The city has a humid subtropical climate, with an average year-round temperature of 24º C (75º F). Known primarily for its bustling commercial activity along the port, Tampico also offers architectural, archaeological and natural attractions, making it one of the region?s main tourist destinations. Among some of the most notable sights are the Catedral de la Inmaculada Concepcion de Tampico (Tampico Cathedral), the Edificio de la Aduana Maritima (Maritime Customs Building), a pyramid known as Las Flores (The Flowers), and the nature areas near Playa Miramar (Miramar Beach) and La Laguna del Carpintero (Carpintero Lagoon), where you can do various water sports. In Tampico?s surrounding areas you?ll find ecological sites like the Laguna El Chairel (Chairel Lagoon), where you can observe a wide variety of wildlife.
